Why free music works
With today's technology it common for unsigned bands and independent solo artists to produce and record their own songs without relying on a record company. But when it comes to promoting the music so people will buy a recording it is becoming harder and harder because of how easy it is to simply download the MP3s for free. Even bands who are signed to a big label have trouble selling CDs, and most of the people who buy CDs don't want the CD itself since MP3s are more versatile than CDs, they are usually buying it just to support the band. The sad part of this is that the band members usually make a very small amount for each CD sold and the every business in between is taking a share of the money.
BandCage is different. We encourage artists to give away their music for free with an appropriate license. If people like what they hear, they will want to support the band in hopes that they will keep playing music. A great way to show support is to go to live shows since the bands usually get a decent cut from the ticket sales and you get to see them play live! Here at BandCage we let bands sell custom merchandise and 95% of the profit goes to the band members, and the other 5% goes towards server costs of running this website. So when you buy a Tshirt, not only do you end up with a quality shirt from an independent band that you like, you also are helping the band to be self sufficient so they can keep playing!
Remember this: Intellectual freedom is the opposite of intellectual property.
